Many businesses use the concept of multilevel marketing to improve their sales force while saving money on wages. By offering individuals a chance to own their own distribution business working for themselves, companies are able to increase sales and profit, while the distributors establish their own customer base and recruit other distributors.

In its simplest form, multilevel marketing networks consist of the main company or product manufacturer with a sales force. Instead of hiring people full-time to sell their product they bring in independent sales professionals to sell their merchandise and offer commission on every sale. For example, a person sells widgets for a major manufacturer and earns a 30 percent commission on every widget sold.

To encourage more sales, the company advises the distributor that if they can recruit others to join the sales network, or team, they can also earn 10 percent of that distributor's sales. Additionally, if that distributor recruits another distributor, the first in line can earn another five percent of their sales. Doing the math, the first distributor starts to understand that a product sells for $100 and if they sell one, they can earn $30. If the next person in their line sells one, they can earn $10 and if their recruit sells one, they get another $5.

It does not take a genius to figure out if each of the people working under them sell two items, they can make $30, which is as much as they make selling one, and there was no work on their part. They may begin to concentrate on recruiting sales people to work under them, making money off their sales and doing of their own work.

I have been marketing on the internet for over five years and building my Network Marketing business. Over the years I have met a lot of interesting folks. Some of those interactions remind me why the Network Marketing Industry is so problematic for so many people?the dark underbelly of Network Marketing.

It is not unusual for Network Marketers to go to my site and fill out the form in an attempt to cross-recruit me into their business. These are people who seek to capitalize upon rather than solve the problem of the known attrition rate in the industry and never stop to ask themselves whether it is good for their business to build with people who can be enticed away from their current enterprises.

I think by now I have pretty much seen it all: the brash distributor from A.C.N Canada who had his brother hit sites. Follow up and you get Mr. Brash who?s pitch went something like. ?you gotta %^&*($#join me. I am at the top of the compensation plan. Money talks &$%# walks!? The couple, with the Travel Biz who would like for you to join them because they are at the top of their compensation plan. The wife fills out the forms online, the husband answers the phone. Then there is the couple with 700 people in their downline. They are not making money because no-one is buying, using or selling the product. People are people. There is even a distributor or two at the top of my company who will go to crossline distributors and offer to train them personally?the catch, of course, is that they quit their business and join their downline. Ah, well, such is life.

Network marketing is getting a lot of attention by mainstream media lately and rightly so. It is the only business model that consistently does better during a recession.

Nowadays people are seeking an alternative way of making money. Everyone is looking for that "right" network marketing business opportunity.

But, what defines a good network marketing business opportunity?

Well, I’ve been involved in network marketing for almost two years and have made half a million dollars. I like to think I know what I’m talking about when it comes to network marketing success.

Here’s what you should look for in a network marketing business opportunity:

• An effective product that people will get excited about

• A good management team

• Really good timing

• No debt

• A great system

If you have these 5 factors then you will have a very good chance of success in whatever network marketing business you decide to choose.

Many people only focus on how good the product is. While it is extremely important to have a great product, that is only one factor that is critical to your success in network marketing. You could have the best product in the world, but if you are weak in the other areas then you will have a difficult time building a big network marketing business.

Make sure you take the time to research all five areas. I would even suggest that you rate each area 1-5. 1 being really poor and 5 being really great.

If you find a network marketing company that scores 5/5 on all five areas then you should jump in with both feet. It is very rare to find such a company!
